Getting in a Groove
Following our "lives changed by the resurrection" theme, I went on to the next chapter of acts, Chapter 16. The life changed in this chapter was Lydia, the Greek woman from Thyatira who was in Philippi, dealing in purple cloth, and found by Paul at a Jewish place of prayer. She seems to have been easily convinced by his message. The second life changed was the Philippian jailer, who had a middle of the night conversion after a series of providential events.
As I was teaching, I felt that the lesson ran longer than it should, longer than I had prepared for. We ended a bit early, but we had also started early. While I enjoy teaching, I'll be glad for the break next week, even if it is just for one week.
One thing I didn't make as part of my lesson, which I thought of as I was at my computer on a Sunday afternoon, engaged in book writing, was that Paul seemed to be in a groove, even this early in his second missionary journey. He went to Philippi and, not finding a synagogue, as he would in other cities on that journey, he went to the place of prayer. He was already in his "by all means save some" mode. Lydia he led to Jesus by preaching, the jailer by singing with follow-up preaching. In between he healed the slave girl of the fortune-telling spirit that possessed her. His groove was that he was always at work for God, missing no opportunity to minister for Him.
I have not been in a groove lately. In fact, it's been just the opposite. I have been discombobulated from a schedule standpoint. Babysitting grandchildren for almost a week was good, but not good for establishing/maintaining a groove. My blog posts have been irregular. My writing has been according to the path of least resistance (i.e. whatever seemed at any given time to be the easiest to write). I've made excuses based on activities of others relative to what I need to do. I haven't done research into peripheral activities, such as learning G.I.M.P. or finding a new theme for my writing blog or researching a new computer and camera.
That's about to change. Trips and entertaining company are at an end, I believe. I'm about at a place where I can make good progress on all the things that I must do. This weekend I found a way to spend an odd moment to prepare for research into a future non-fiction book I plan to do. I made major progress on some much needed yard work, on paperwork, on housework. I'm caught up on budgeting, if not on filing. My attitude is good, my health is good, my weight loss is about to enter into another stage. I should soon be in a groove.
In fact, I think I'm already in the groove, based on measured progress this weekend. I need to accomplish another week of this type of progress, at which time I should be able to report back here: I am, indeed, in a groove.
Stay tuned.

New Year, Old Goals Revised
I was up at 8:30 AM, tired of the prone position, and ready to drink some coffee and read. So I've been doing that. My mind thought to the new year. I'm not one to make resolutions, though goal setting is always possible. I thought about my writing career, and what I would like to accomplish. So I wrote some goals, quickly, without giving a lot of thought to exactly how achievable these are. I used to post monthly goals on this blog, but gave that up early last year. I will, however, post the goals I wrote on the last page of my current journal notebook.
- Finish In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. Currently at 15,000 on its way to 85,000 words, it's well along but far from done. I will consider finished to mean having the book completely written and having gone through one round of edits.
- Finish A Harmony of the Gospels. The harmony is done, and I'm working on passage notes and appendixes. This goal is definitely achievable.
- Write 100 articles for Suite101.com. This might be a stretch. I have 116 written and three started. This is a good goal, one I should try very hard to meet.
- Continue writing for Buildipedia.com, with a goal of earning at least $2000 from articles there.
- Finish the Bible study I'm currently researching, To Exile and Back. This has turned out to be more involved than I originally expected. In a vacuum it would be easily achievable, but with other writing to do I'm not sure.
- Plan, research, and write a small group study Essential John Wesley. This has been on my mind for some time. I've been mulling over what I would consider to be essential of his writings, and may even have a few notes somewhere.
- Work on my small group study book Screwtape's Good Advice. I began this three years ago because I had a publisher in mind for it, and prepared a detailed outline and four sample chapters before meeting with that publisher at a conference. When, after a considerable delay, the publisher said he wasn't interested, I let it lapse. But it's a good idea (if I say so myself), and so would like to follow-through with some more of the chapters.
- Develop the Bible study Good King, Bad King. I began this a year or two ago, doing two lessons in it, but then didn't find time to work on it further. I'd like to at least know the length of the lesson series, have an outline of the lessons, and know the research needed prior to writing. The actual writing, if the planning proves there's really something worth doing here, is most likely a 2012 project.
- Blog at least 120 times. Only 119 to go.

April Goals.
1. Replace my failing router. Do it tomorrow before rebellion occurs. Figure out how to install/configure/whatevertheheck ones does with a router.
2. Finish income taxes. Getting real close on the Federal haven't started the state.
3. Do my mother-in-law's taxes. Haven't started.
4. Blog 10 times.
5. Write/publish 5 articles at Suite 101.
6. Work ten days on the Harmony of the gospels.
7. Somehow keep the dream alive.

The March Report
1. Blog 12 or more times. This seems a comfortable pace. I'd like to bump this up to about 16 posts a month, but will wait to make that a goal. >>> I bloggd exactly 12 times. Should have done more, but at least I made my goal.
2. Write and post 10 articles at Suite101.com. I think I can do this. >>> I fell one short on this, posting 9 articles at Suite101.
3. Write 1,000 words on In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. Almost made it in February; might as well try it in March. >>>Well, I did nothing on my novel this month. My attention was pulled to working on the Harmony of the Gospels, and much time that I could have put into the novel, or into Suite articles, instead went to the Harmony. And I'm okay with that. I really got a lot done on it.
4. Work on a new Bible study, about the sacraments. I may have an outline somewhere. I'll be teaching it in about two months. Time to get to work. >>>I completed quite a bit of work on this. The outline of the lesson series is done; I have a good idea of what it is I want to accomplish; and I'm reading a book for research. I could be much farther along, but I feel good about this.
5. Make three freelance submissions. This is pretty minimal, but I'm working a lot on work stuff still, and will be making a presentation on the 31st and two or three brown bags during the month. I find the time needed to research freelance markets and actually make the submittals tedious, and for some reason if I'm heavy into work stuff, including taking stuff home, I can't concentrate on freelance. Of course, a couple of the work things I'm working on could make good freelance articles about engineering. Hmmm. >>>Not quite sure how to count this. I made two freelance submissions--or I could count it as five, if I count the articles I submitted to a Suite101 contest as separate submissions. It's really not as much as I hoped to accomplish.
6. Read 40 pages in writer helps, not including blogs. That's forty solid pages, books or magazines (not including ads). I would say I read maybe 20 pages, not 40. The research into the Bible study took up much of my reading. That and working logically through my magazine and newsletters pile. The first issue of my subscription to Poets and Writers magazine is next on the pile; I should get to it tomorrow. So this will be an easy thing to do in April.
So, all in all a month with a fair amount of accomplishment, but not as much as I hoped for. Taxes got in the way (as they will in April), as did the church parking lot project (as it will in April also. I'll come back in a few hours with April goals.

That's it for now. As I said this is on the fly and off the cuff, little thought.
The February Report
Here's my report on February 2010, how I did relative to the goals I set.
1. Blog 12 times or more. >> Blogged 13 times, so met this goal.
2. Write and publish at least 8 articles at Suite101.com. >> Wrote and published 10 articles at Suite 101, so exceeded this goal
3. Consider applying for a feature writer position at Suite101; more on that in a post later today. >> That was kind of a measly goal. "Consider"? Well, I have a kind of measly result. I applied, was one of three candidates, then withdrew my application in a fit of pique at life in general. So I'm going to consider this goal met.
4. Complete an article I'm writing for BiblioBuffet.com and submit it. Ran it through critique group last night, so it's down to final editing. >> I completed it and submitted it. I heard back from the editor yesterday: She'll make a decision by Tuesday night. She took some time off in February was the reason for the delay.
5. Make at least three freelance submittals (including BiblioBuffet). >> Made three submittal, exactly on goal
6. Write at least 1000 words in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. >> Almost; wrote 860 words. Although I didn't make it, it felt good to be writing on it again.
7. Read at least 50 pages in a book about writing better. I have four or five at my disposal right now. >> I did this, but in writing magazines, not in books.
Okay, not a bad month relative to goals. Now I need to work us some March goals. Stay tuned.

February Goals
Still, without some goals, I won't make any writing progress. So here's some to start; perhaps I'll edit them later (yeah, I always say that).
1. Blog 12 times or more.
2. Write and publish at least 8 articles at Suite101.com.
3. Consider applying for a feature writer position at Suite101; more on that in a post later today.
4. Complete an article I'm writing for BiblioBuffet.com and submit it. Ran it through critique group last night, so it's down to final editing.
5. Make at least three freelance submittals (including BiblioBuffet).
6. Write at least 1000 words in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People.
7. Read at least 50 pages in a book about writing better. I have four or five at my disposal right now.

The January Report
For sure the pneumonia kept me from being productive. I never ran a fever, never felt poorly. I just coughed, from deep within, and then had to sit and be quiet to recover. That coughing takes a lot out of you--or me. I had little desire to work at writing after trying to hack my lungs up every five or ten minutes.
So, I think I did poorly on my goals. I'll paste them in and we'll see.
1. Blog 12 times. Made this, blogging 14 times.
2. Write and publish 8 articles at Suite101.com. I wrote only two articles at Suite in January. I did some research on two more, but they don't count.
3. Make at least one freelance submission. I sort of did this, although it's not really what I intended. I submitted a poem to a poetry contest at Absolute Write. Came in tied for 7th in a vote of forum members, so no prize. No entry fee either.
4. Write 1000 words in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. I did nothing on this novel. Maybe February.
5. Begin work with Demand Studios. I looked at their stuff once, including the list of articles I could claim, but didn't begin writing for them. Maybe February.
One thing I accomplished that wasn't on the list was writing an article for the Bibliobuffet web site. I'll show it to critique group tonight, and hopefully submit it tomorrow. It will be a guest column, and I've no guarantee they will accept it. If they do, it's a (small) paying gig.

January Goals
The 7th is kind of late for January goals, but this is the first time I've felt like typing them. Wrote them in my journal on the 4th.
1. Blog 12 times.
2. Write and publish 8 articles at Suite101.com.
3. Make at least one freelance submission.
4. Write 1000 words in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People.
5. Begin work with Demand Studios articles.
I should probably have more goals than that, but in my reduced capacity I'll feel good about getting that much done. Last night, while watching the football game on mute, I put together notes for a Bible study I want to write. I looked in the usual places, and didn't find it. I'd like to get some of it typed today.

The December Report
But Saturday included packing the van for Lynda's, Sara's, and Ephraim's trip to Oklahoma City. Still, I did less of that work than I usually did, Lynda and Sara doing more. At 2:00 PM they drove off, and I hit the couch, probably at the low point. I saw a little of a bowl game, but not much, as I dozed or slept for a few hours. I got on the computer a while last night, but didn't feel like writing. I finally felt like reading a little.
Today I woke up to find 2 inches of snow on the ground. We were only supposed to get a dusting. Since I parked the pick-up in the drive on Saturday, that meant I had to shovel or else would not be able to get up the slope tomorrow and head to the doc. So I shoveled the part of the drive behind the pick-up. And I felt marvelous doing it. I coughed little, and the fresh air entering my lungs, even though it was around 26 degrees, seemed good to me. I coughed little while I was out, and not much the rest of the day (until the last half hour). I spent a lot of it on the couch, or in my chair.
So I'm behind in my beginning of the month posts. I'll check in with my December goals now, but will leave January goals till tomorrow. Where I fell short in December, I'll blame it on two weeks of being sick.
1. Blog 12 times >>> Did this.
2. Post at least 8 articles to Suite101.com >>> Fell two short, posting only six articles.
3. Make my submittals log perfect: all entries made in appropriate places; all acceptances/rejections gathered. >>> "Perfect" is a hard standard to live up to, but I think I accomplished this. I spent an evening early in the month getting things up to date, and don't think I left anything hanging at the end of the month.
4. Make my ideas notebook perfect: appropriate dividers; hard copies of all ideas in the file. >>> I did quite a bit of work on this, but "perfect"? Probably not. Still, I believe I have a system in place that is significantly more workable than what I had at the beginning of the month.
5. All poems properly filed; includes transferring all poems from my computer at work to the one at home, and making the one at home the official repository of electronic copies; hard copies of all poems in a file. >>> Did almost nothing on this, except dealing with some of the hard copies I had floating around the office and the house.
6. Write 2,000 words in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. Last month's goal was too ambitious, given all that's going on. >>> Nope, did nothing on this.
7. Finish that appendix in the Harmony of the Gospels. I believe I left it, some months ago, with not much more than a page to finish. I shouldn't leave it hanging. >>> Yes! After having this for a goal for several months, I finished it. This required that I read through the entire appendix and the related text. After all this time I wasn't sure what the last page of the appendix was supposed to say. I decided it wasn't too bad as it was, but did see a few things that needed to be added. Anyway, it's done, and I actually began working on the next appendix.
8. Continue studies of Demand Studios (tutorials, editorial guides), and begin writing for them. >>> I continued my study of what Demand Studios requires, but I did not begin writing for them. I discovered that they do have some articles available for writing that I can probably write, maybe about $100 to $200 worth. I'm fairly certain this will be a goal in January.

The November Report
1. Blog at least 12 times. I blogged 14 times.
2. Post at least 8 articles at Suite101.com Posted 9 articles at Suite.
3. Write 10,000 word in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. Only wrote a little over 1,000 words, so way behind on this one.
4. Complete the Bible study writing goal of October. I actually did this. Early in the month I gathered all (well, I think all) of the started or planned Bible studies, listed them, determined where they were relative to the completion continuum, and put them in a semi-organized file. I have a little more to do on this, but I consider it essentially completed.
5. Make at least four writing related submittals. I completed this, making either 4 or 5 submittals. I'll check my submittals log later tonight and see what the exact number was.
6. Complete the started but as yet unfinished appendix in my Harmony of the Gospels. Did nothing on this.
7. Work on Screwtape's Good Advice. Did nothing on this.
So, all in all not a very good month as far as writing accomplishment goes. Guess I'll have to try harder in December.

November Goals
1. Blog at least 12 times. I've hit this many consecutive months.
2. Post at least 8 articles at Suite101.com. My current plans call for more than this. I might revise this goal tonight and set a higher target.
3. Write 10,000 words in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. This is in place of just finishing the chapter I'm in. If I make this goal, I will be about 1/4 into the novel.
4. Complete the Bible study goal of October. Assess where I am with that goal; complete the organization; and do the evaluation.
5. Make at least 4 writing related submittals. I won't specify what type of submittals. I made one yesterday, so I'm 1/4 complete with this goal already.
6. Complete the started but unfinished appendix in my harmony of the gospels. Might as well keep it as a goal until I get it done.
7. Work on Screwtape's Good Advice, my study guide of The Screwtape Letters. I may be teaching a class in this come February, and it would be nice to have this to use as a guide.
I'll leave it at seven goals, and see what I can accomplish.
The October Report
1. Blog 12 or more times. >>> I blogged 16 times. Score 1.
2. Write 7 articles for Suite101.com. >>> I wrote and posted 8 articles, so squeaked by. Score 2.
3. Complete chapter 7 of In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People. >>> I did NOT do this. I did begin sharing the novel with my writers critique group, and did a little bit of editing based on those critiques. Perhaps I can give myself half credit. Score 2.5.
4. Make three literary or freelance magazine submittals. >>> Let's see if I can remember, because I don't have my submittal log here at work. I didn't submit anything to any literary magazines, but I don't think it was three. In fact, I think it was just one. I'll check tonight and might edit this. For now I'll put it down as a goose-egg. Score still 2.5.
5. Make sure that appendix [i.e. the one I've worked on since August] in my harmony of the gospels is finished. >>> Did not do. Not sure why I didn't other than lack of interest. I did read a little in the harmony, and noted a couple of edits I have to make, but that gives me no credit. Score still 2.5.
6. Organize the various Bible studies I've started. This includes listing them, and evaluating them to see if I want to take them further. >>> I did some of this, early in the month, and my mind is somewhat hazy about it. I know I gathered all the loose papers of Bible study ideas to one place. I think I made the list, but I didn't do the evaluation. Can I give myself half credit for this? I think I will. Score 3.0.
So there it is. Not the prettiest of pictures but perhaps not the worst. Hopefully I'll do better in November, the Thanksgiving holiday not withstanding.

October Goals
- Blog 12 times or more.
- Write 7 articles for Suite101.com.
- Complete Chapter 7 of In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People
- Make three freelance or literary magazine submittals.
- Make sure that appendix in my harmony of the gospels is finished.
- Organize the various Bible studies I've started. This includes listing them, and evaluating them to see if I want to take them further.
The September Report
Blog at least 12 times. I think I blogged 13 times, so I achieved this goal.
Post at least 12 articles to Suite101.com Let me check at Suite...oh, only 6 articles. My mind didn't go dead, just my desire to write for them.
Finish chapter 7 in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People; start chapter 8 I worked one evening on this, getting a little farther in Chapter 7 but not completing it, and not working on Chapter 8.
Complete one appendix in the Harmony of the gospels >>> Hard to remember, but I think I got this one done. If I didn't actually finish it, I'm real close; probably everything except proof-reading and polishing.
Plan at least six lessons in Good King, Bad King series. By plan I mean something more than just a lesson title, something about the king and his life. >>> I did nothing on this, nothing at all. It just wasn't on my radar screen.
So there it is, a dismal month as far as writing goals. Now I'll plan for October. Given that I'm starting a day late, I'm not hopeful.

- Complete one appendix in the Harmony of the gospels
- Plan at least six lessons in Good King, Bad King series. By plan I mean something more than just a lesson title, something about the king and his life.
More later, if I think of anything.

The August Report
- Write 10 articles for Suite101.com. I did this. Actually published 16 articles in August.
Blog 12 to 15 times. Did this. Had 16 blog posts if I'm not mistaken.
Study: search engine optimization; sources for royalty free pictures; and picture types for digital photos. Well, I did some of this, enough to get by. But I have much, much more to do.
Finish chapter 7 in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People; Begin chapter 8. Fell short on this one. I got some of chapter 7 done, perhaps 2/3, maybe just a half, but didn't work on chapter 8 at all except for a little brainstorming.
Finish one appendix in a Harmony of the gospels; also one passage notes section. I did a little better than expected. I completed two appendixes, and I think one set of passage notes. I'm not sure about the passage notes. That's all on my computer at home, and I'd have to look at it, but I think I got one set done.
Complete the engineering article on storm water detention that is due Sept. 1. Started, but not done. I found out the deadline is not until Sept 14, so I slacked off a bit. Since this is a non-paying gig, and since CEI can benefit from it, I'm doing it on company time. It's on today's to-do list, and I have a fair chance of actually getting to it.
More work on Good King, Bad King. Try to identify and outline at least four more lessons. I can't say that I completed this, though I did brainstorm it and write a few notes. I'll add it again for September.
Work on The Strongest of All study from the apocrypha. I have the five lessons prepared, but need to add some lead-in and conclusion discussions. Completed, and four of the five lessons taught. This actually didn't take much time, and probably was not a big enough thing to be considered a goal.
And, based on my incomplete goals from July, get some more work done on Life on a Yo Yo, in an attempt to make it a publishable study. No, I didn't even think about Life on a Yo Yo this month. As I feared, writing for Suite101.com has taken up almost all of my creative writing time.

August Goals
- Write 10 articles for Suite101.com.
- Blog 12 to 15 times.
- Study: search engine optimization; sources for royalty free pictures; and picture types for digital photos.
- Finish chapter 7 in In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People; Begin chapter 8
- Finish one appendix in a Harmony of the gospels; also one passage notes section.
- Complete the engineering article on storm water detention that is due Sept. 1.
- More work on Good King, Bad King. Try to identify and outline at least four more lessons.
- Work on The Strongest of All study from the apocrypha. I have the five lessons prepared, but need to add some lead-in and conclusion discussions.
- And, based on my incomplete goals from July, get some more work done on Life on a Yo Yo, in an attempt to make it a publishable study.
The July Report
1. Blog at least 12 times. Did this. I think I was at 15 or so.
2. Post 15 articles at Suite101.com. I beat this, posting 17.
3. Research, prepare, and submit 2 other freelance queries. I got the research done, but not the queries themselves. I drafted one but haven't yet sent it. I had to re-query one from the previous month, due to it being lost in that magazine's system.
4. Complete one set of passage notes for my Harmony of the Gospels. Got this done, as well as proofing and editing the appendix I almost finished in June.
5. Complete the first two lessons in Good King, Bad King (already started and maybe half-way done) and outline the full series. I can report only partial progress on this. I got the lessons done, and taught them last week and today. However, I have not yet outlined the rest of the series. I've brainstormed it a little, but brainstorming without getting something down on paper doesn't count.
6. For Life on a Yo Yo: Write a "sell sheet" for the Bible study; complete the first four lessons in publishable form. I totally dropped the ball on this, not even thinking about it all month. And it's not even in my draft goals for August. I may have to amend them.
7. Complete the new chapter of In Front of Fifty Thousand Screaming People that I got half-way done in June. It would be nice to both complete that and start another chapter, but I'm not making that a goal, not with everything else I have going on. Plus, I'm a freelancer not, not a novelist. I did a little more work on chapter 7, but I cannot say it's done. I imagine it needs another hour or two to be called done. I sent the book as is on to a new beta reader who requested it. We'll see what he says.
So, I hit some things but missed others. All in all it was a productive month. I'll next post my goals for August, a month which I hope will be even more productive.
